January 5th – Introduction to Red Team and Mayor’s Cup
January 5th, 2022 was the first meeting of the New Year and the start of the Encrypted Club’s 2nd semester. To start off the meeting, President Gutierrez begins introducing the club to the term “hacking” and the main focus that the club will have for this semester. In this case, hacking was introduced as a way of breaking into systems and web pages in order to find data/information.
With that in mind, teams would be competing in Mayor’s Cyber Cup, competing with other schools in the Inland Empire, Desert region of California. This competition would in fact be focusing on the offensive side of cybersecurity.
Before getting started on new activities, it has been decided that a new Treasurer would be voted for Encrypted Club which would also allow the Constitution to be edited. The two members that would be going for the Treasurer’s position would be Hayden Paumier and Sara Magaziotis. After giving their speeches, it was up to the club members to vote for one of them to be the treasurer for the rest of the semester.
When the votes were counted, the position was given to Sara, and with that, the Consitution was edited and Sara was now officially the treasurer of Encrypted Club.
Once everything was settled, Coach Smith was able to launch his CTF on the server so members could be able to have practice different categories such as Forensic Questions, Cryptography, Linux, Networking, etc. The CTF does in fact give a broad overview of what Mayor’s Cup would be like and how it would most likely go which is mostly doing research and putting the pieces together in order to get the answer. Not only that but each member was competing against each other as their points were being counted on the scoreboard, seeing who would be at the top by the end of the meeting.
